Havaianas was created in Brazil in 1962 with inspiration from the Japanese Zori sandal.

1964 – the Kombi
By 1964, traveling salesmen would sell havaianas from their Volkswagen Kombi vans.

In 1966, we registered the patent – inventing the rubber flip flop!

1969 – more colors!
In 1969, we only had one color-blocked option, but after an happy mistake made a batch of green ones, the Top was created in a range of colors!

1980 – an essential
Havaianas was officially recognized as part of Brazilian culture after we were included on a government list of everyday fundamental items (alongside rice and beans!).

1990’s – patterns that pop
A surfer trend of flipping the soles upside down inspired us to introduce single-colored styles and launch our first ever pattern.

1998 – Brazilian passion
To celebrate the ’98 World Soccer Championship, we launched the (now best-selling) style with a small Brazilian flag on the strap.

1999 – a runway phenomenon
We partnered with Jean Paul Gaultier in the 90’s for a runway show featuring havaianas and we’ve been collaborating with fashion designers ever since.
